Celebrate summer with JETAA! This issue is packed full of things to join, including concerts in the park, a trip to the Botanical Gardens, beach volleyball, and live sporting events!
JET Q&A Session
Remember what it was like having all those questions before leaving for Japan? The Japan Information Center is holding a Q&A session for this year’s new JET participants on Sunday, June 24th. From 3:45-5:00pm, JETAA Chicago will host a beer-and-sushi reception. You are welcome to come talk with soon-to-be JETs, share some war stories and wish them luck! Oh Snap, a Photo Exhibit!
Photos are a great way to share all the things we’ve seen and done. Well, get your photos ready because JETAA is planning a photo exhibit to show life through the eyes of a JET. Paparazzi need apply!

Calling all past, present, and potential Jet Setters!! Our JETAA Beach Volleyball team, the Jet Setters, has only just started in the Summer Beach Volleyball League!
This year we’ve entered a 6 vs. 6 person league. This will be a recreational league and is meant to be fun! All skill levels from beginner to advanced are welcome!
Tournament games are held every Tuesday, from 6:30, starting June 12th and will go until mid-August. Games are held at Montrose Beach (4400 N. Lake Shore Drive).

Bingo at Heiwa Terrace
Come volunteer your time to read bingo numbers and meet those staying at the community. It’s really fun and everyone there is always so pleased to see us! It will be this Thursday, June 21st at 7pm.

Chicago White Sox Outings
The Chicago White Sox have dedicated Thursday, July 5 and Saturday, August 25 to help aid the relief efforts for those affected by the devastating earthquake & tsunami. A portion of every ticket purchased will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross through the Japan America Society of Chicago.

Chicago Fire Soccer Game
Watch the Vancouver Whitecaps Jun Marquez Davdison, born in Japan and played in the J-League, battle with the Chicago Fire! Proceeds of every ticket sold will benefit Japan related charities, including JETAA!

Japanese Language Classes
The Japan America Society of Chicago now offers 8 levels of Japanese language courses from July 9-Aug 30. Each is tailored to the expertise and type of study required by students. Weekly lessons provide students with an opportunity to being the study of Japanese or to sharpen previously acquired skills. All courses are taught by an experienced native instructor of the Japanese language. Classes are $225 Members & Continuing Students or $250 Non-Members. For more information, visit their webpage.
Gene Siskel Film Center Miyazaki Festival: From June 8 through August 2, the Gene Siskel Film Center presents “Castles in the Sky,” a tribute to Japan’s renowned Studio Ghibli. Tickets are $7 for General Admission and $6 for students. Check out their website for more information, including the schedule.
Father’s Day at the Botanic Gardens: Take your dad out to the Botanic Gardens to enjoy the Ikebana Sogetsu Exhibition, which will feature flower arranging demonstrations and 50 Ikebana on display on Saturday, June 16, noon – 4:30 p.m. and Sunday (Father’s Day), June 17, 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
JASC Suburban Meishi Exchange: Join Chicago’s finest professionals for the Japan America Society of Chicago Suburban Business Card Exchange. Network with engaging individuals, enjoy delicious appetizers, and mingle in a vibrant atmosphere. on Thursday, July 26, 2012, 6:30pm – 9:00pm at Weber Grill Restaurant (1010 N. Meacham Road, Schaumburg, IL 60173). The event is $25 for members, $30 for non-members.
Ginza Festival at Midwest Buddhist Temple: The 57th Annual Ginza Holiday will be presented by the Midwest Buddhist Temple in Old Town (435 W. Menomonee St, Chicago), on August 10-12th. Highlights include master craftsman from Tokyo, cultural exhibits, Japanese street food, and a Yoko Nogoe concert. More information can be found on their website.
JETAA Exec Meeting in July
All JETAA members are welcome to attend our monthly Executive Board meetings. The next one will be held at the JETRO office (1 East Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL) on Monday, July 9th, 6:30 – 8:00pm. Dinner is provided to all who attend.

Botanical Gardens Visit: Join us for a family-friendly trip to the Chicago Botanic Gardens on Sunday, July 15th! We’ll meet at the Glencoe Metra station at 1:15 and take the free shuttle over to the Garden. For more information, email Jessie Spooner.
